The most common disposals are switch-activated that get activated or start function when you press a switch. Most of the garbage disposals make lot of noise. While buying a garbage disposal, keep in mind following points:

  1. Buy a fatter garbage disposal. They make lesser noise.
  2. Make sure that the disposal you choose fits comfortably under your sink.
  3. Avoid clogging it with foods such as potato skins, melon rinds, fruit and vegetable peels, eggshells, celery, coffee grounds etc. This will increase the life of the disposal.
  4. Buy a garbage disposal of at least 1/2 horsepower. Disposals with lesser power can get stuck easily and they also do not last too long.
