Types of Garbage Disposals

Garbage disposals are a must-have home and kitchen appliance. They simply grind up and wash away most of the home and kitchen garbage and wastes. All this can be done by simple pushing a button or switch on the appliance. This is quite comfortable, isn’t it?

Different models and designs of garbage disposables are available today and most garbage disposals fit the standard drain outlet. They are either hard-wired or plugged into a power box or receptacle. The most common disposals are switch-activated that get activated or start function when you press a switch. Another model is ‘batch-feed garbage disposal that start when you insert and turn a special drain plug.

Power supply or switch of garbage disposals must be far away from the sink because there will be running water near the disposal.

Most of the garbage disposals make lot of noise. While buying a garbage disposal, keep in mind following points:

  1. Buy a fatter garbage disposal. They make lesser noise.
  2. Make sure that the disposal you choose fits comfortably under your sink.
  3. Avoid clogging it with foods such as potato skins, melon rinds, fruit and vegetable peels, eggshells, celery, coffee grounds etc. This will increase the life of the disposal.
  4. Buy a garbage disposal of at least 1/2 horsepower. Disposals with lesser power can get stuck easily and they also do not last too long.
